Great hair can tie your whole look together, no matter what type of look you’re going for. If you’re not naturally blessed with beautiful curls though, it can be difficult replicating the look.
Take me for example. I was born with a head full of thick, pin-straight hair. If I wanted to wear my hair curly, it would take hours of painstakingly wrapping each strand around a curling wand or iron and hoping for the best. Thankfully though, I’ve found a way to curl hair without heat for the perfect overnight curls. Instead of torturing my hair with damaging heat, I can now pull off gorgeous heatless curls overnight by using heatless hair curlers.
Want to know exactly how doing heatless curls works? It’s easier than you might think!
What Exactly Are Heatless Curls?
Heatless curls are just what they sound like! Instead of using heated tools like a curling iron or wand to achieve the perfect set of curls, overnight curls or no-heat curls don’t require any heat. They’re a great technique to learn when you want to give your hair a break or simply experiment with a new curling method. What’s more, many heatless waves/heatless curl methods are extremely easy to learn how to do!
We’ll go into a step-by-step demonstration later, but for now, let’s talk about why you might want to learn how to do no-heat curls in the first place.
Reasons Why You Should Give No-Heat Curls a Go
1. Heatless Curls Are Healthier for Your Hair
Probably the biggest reason why I’d recommend trying to do heatless curls overnight is that they’re much easier on your hair. While it’s okay to sometimes use heat on your hair together with a heat protectant, using a curling iron every day to get your desired look can damage your hair over time, leaving it more prone to breakage, split ends, and dullness.
With the no-heat curls method though, you won’t have to ever worry about damaging your delicate strands. And, with a little practice, you’ll get the same incredible look as you would with any heated hair styling tool!
Trying heatless curls/heatless waves is an easy way to help your hair stay damage-free, especially if you’re looking to give your hair a break or have brittle or color-treated hair.
2. No-Heat Curls Are Easy to Do
Another great advantage of trying heatless curls overnight is that they’re super easy to do! Especially with Bamboo Heatless Curls Kit, you can wrap your hair up in less than 5 minutes. Once you get the hang of it, you can do it without even thinking, setting yourself up for a great hair day every night before you go to bed.
Oh, and if you were wondering whether or not heatless hair curlers are comfortable to sleep on, don’t worry! They’re incredibly soft so you won’t even notice they’re even there. That’s what makes overnight curls so great!
3. Heatless Hair Curlers Are a Sustainable Alternative
You may not realize it, but using heated hair styling tools day in and day out can use up a lot of energy, especially when you leave your tools plugged in all day. If you’re looking to reduce your daily carbon footprint, learning how to do heatless curls overnight is a simple way to do that. Plus, Bamboo Heatless Curls Kit is 100% cruelty-free and made from sustainably sourced bamboo.
4. Overnight Curls Are More Affordable
When I started learning how to do no-heat curls, I was amazed at not only how much time I was saving every day, but also how much money I was able to save as well. Buying and replacing curling wands and irons can cost hundreds of dollars, especially when you’re buying high-quality products.
But when I learned I could get the same results without those tools, I stopped buying them. Now, I can save a little more of my hard-earned money or spend it on products that will help my hair stay healthy instead of damaging it.
How to Use a Heatless Hair Curlers Kit Step-by-Step
Now that you’re super excited to try heatless curls for yourself, it’s time to get acquainted with the process of how to curl hair without heat (don’t worry – it’s easy). Here we’ll break it down into each step.
- Start with clean, dry, or almost-dry hair. Place the headband on the top of your head so each end falls over one side of your hair. If you want to, you can secure the headband in place with a claw clip.
- The next step in using your heatless hair curlers is to divide your hair into two sections. This will ensure you get evenly distributed overnight curls.
- Now onto the fun part! To get beautiful no-heat curls, start by carefully wrapping small sections of your hair around the headband. Add a little more hair to each section as you go.
- Once you’re done wrapping your hair, secure with a scrunchie. I don’t recommend using hair ties because they can leave dents in your hair.
- You’ve successfully learned to curl hair without heat! You can now sleep on the curls overnight or simply wait several hours before unwrapping your gorgeous overnight curls!
One trick I’ve learned to curl hair without heat is to use a couple of products before and after using your heatless hair curlers. Before I wrap my hair I like to use Volume Wizard™ Pre-Styling Spray or Ocean Water Sea Salt Spray for added volume and texture. Especially if you have straight hair, adding a few spritzes can really help add a little more oomph to your final results.
And once I’ve unwrapped my masterpiece in the morning, I use Final Touch Hair Spray to keep everything looking great all day.
The Best Ways to Create Heatless Waves and Texture
Along with using the headband to curl hair without heat, you can amp up your heatless curls by prepping your hair with a few products beforehand. Here are my recommendations if you really want to bring your no-heat curls to the next level.
Curl Crush™ Defining Cream
If you already have a little texture in your natural hair, you can use Curl Crush™ Defining Cream together with Bamboo Defining Brush to create beautifully defined curls and enhance your natural curl pattern. This leave-in curl cream hydrates, softens, and strengthens for more defined, bouncy curls!
Have straight hair? The next two products are for you!
Ocean Water Sea Salt Spray
Whether you’re looking to achieve beachy heatless waves or classic no-heat curls, using a sea salt spray beforehand is an easy way to add more body and texture. My favorite Ocean Water Sea Salt Spray is super lightweight and works for all hair types. Plus, it’s enriched with organic aloe vera and other moisturizing ingredients to keep your hair soft and nourished – no build-up here!
Final Touch Hair Spray
Of course, any great hairstyle needs the perfect finishing touch to help it last. Final Touch Hair Spray gives hair medium hold and weightless shine so you can literally set it and forget it! Or try Mineral Clay Wax if you are looking for a 100% natural styling product that gives strong hold and a matte finish.

How to Identify Heat-Damaged Hair
Noticing signs of heat damage early can help you correct it before it gets to be a big problem. Here are several signs of heat damage you’ll want to remember when you’re checking your hair. If you notice any of these signs, lay off the heated tools and try heat-free curls instead!
Dryness
After washing your hair, does it look shiny or dull? If it looks dull, it’s likely due to heat damage. The cuticles of our hair strands are what contribute to its shine and lustre, but when those cuticles get damaged, the shine is the first thing to go. Dullness and dryness can both then contribute to breakage and split ends.
Faded Color
Here’s a sign of damage you might not have known about. If your hair is color-treated, I recommend keeping an eye on your color.
The thing about heat damaged hair is, it can’t actually retain color very well. This is because damaged hair often becomes more porous, which means it can absorb more hair dye than is intended, leaving you with darker strands. Additionally, your color can fade faster than expected, something nobody wants. If you notice this, it may be time to put down the curling irons and try overnight curls instead.
Hair Loss
When our hair gets damaged, the proteins making up each strand degrade, breaking down the bonds that keep strands strong. This can cause hair loss. We lose 50-100 strands each day, but if you notice that you’re losing much more than normal, it can be a sign of heat damage. There are a lot of things you can do to remedy the situation, along with trying heatless curls overnight to get the look you want without further damaging your hair.
Split Ends
Split ends are one of the most common signs of damage and are pretty easy to spot. They happen when hair loses elasticity and moisture, causing it to break easily. Split ends start at the bottom of the hair strand. But left unchecked, they can spread up the hair shaft and lead to breakage. Traditional hair elastics can make split ends worse, which is why it’s important to use soft scrunchies when tying up your overnight curls.
Frizziness
While some of us were born with hair that naturally leans towards the frizzy side, extra frizz is still something to look out for when you’re assessing your locks for heat damage. If your hair is becoming really hard to tame, it could be damaged.
Another thing to look for is short pieces of hair that stick up. These are hairs that broke off mid-shaft due to dryness. Being gentle with your hair and sleeping on a Silky Bamboo Pillowcase can help keep frizz at bay, along with doing heatless curls overnight.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t avoid using heat entirely. When I do use heat though, I protect my hair first by using Thermal Shield™ Heat Protectant. This helps prevent breakage and split ends while adding a beautiful shine to my hair. You can also add a small amount to your ends after doing heatless curls for extra shine.
Now that you know how to curl hair without heat, you can achieve the bounciest curls of your life – no damage necessary.
